PROFESSIONAL BIO

Ph.D in Modern European and British History

My name is Tiffany Beebe and I’ve recently finished my Ph.D in Modern European and British history at the University of Colorado Boulder.  I’m interested in the experiences of immigrants and minority populations in more unusual, out of the way places.  My dissertation explores the experiences of “refugee industrialists,” who were Continental and mostly Jewish refugees who fled Hitler in the 1930s and set up businesses in the "Special Areas" of Britain.

Other research interests include the treatment and experiences of minoritized populations,  women’s health and welfare, gender/sexuality and queer history, Israel/Palestine, imperialism and decolonization, and nationalism within the British Isles.

I completed my BA in history at the College of Idaho and my MA in Contemporary British History at King’s College London.  My BA thesis focused on miscarriages of justice against Irish minorities living in England during the Terror.  My MA thesis used the “Permissive Society” legislation of the 1960s to explore the changing relationship between individuals and the state, state control, and regulation.

I am currently also working on three other projects.  The first looks at the experiences of Irish minority populations in Britain during the interwar years, particularly in light of Irish nationalism, the IRA, and the outbreak of the Second World War.  The second project explores British attitudes toward the Mandate of Palestine.  The final project delves into antisemitism in modern Britain, culminating in our contemporary period.
