REFUGEE INDUSTRIALISTS IN THE "SPECIAL AREAS"

My dissertation looks at Continental refugees who fled the Third Reich and settled in the "Special Areas" of Britain in the 1930s and 1940s.  I explore how largely Jewish refugees experienced their migration to four very different (but still largely Christian) parts of Britain:  Lankarshire in southwest Scotland, Tyneside in the North East, South Wales, and West Cumberland.  How did locals respond to and receive refugees?  Did this change when those refugees established businesses and became their bosses?  How did local British Jewish communities respond to Continental Jewish refugees?  How did the onset of the Second World War change all of this?  What happened to these enclaves of refugee industry?

To assist in this research, I am creating a searchable database of these industries and mapping these refugee communities.  If you would like more information or have anything to contribute, please do get in touch!
